Few new southern rock bands can
successfully revive classic sounds of the Southern Rock genre while still
maintaining some sort of relevancy. Formed in the early 90’s, Clutch has since
approached the Blues, Rock’n’Roll and Southern Rock genre with a modernistic
twist. Their take on the genre is very groovy and fueled with big riffs toped
with intelligent and often humourous lyrics. Though Clutch have recently gained a
bit of fame by featuring “Electric Worry”
off of the album “Blast Tyrant” on a
“Left 4 Dead 2” TV spot, the rest of
their catalogue cannot be missed.
Clutch’s earlier
material, Transnational Speedway League
(1993) and Clutch (1995) are much
different than what they do now. The sound is more rooted into the punk and
hardcore genre, with aggressive vocals and simplified guitar riffs. Since the
1998 release, “The Elephant Riders”
the band has continuously refined their sound and has become much more better at becoming a true southern rock band. The vocals have become much more approachable, while often
still being aggressive. The guitars have become more complex and interesting to
listen too, with effects such as the Wah pedal being commonplace. The drums
continue to drive this band, adding incredible groove and intricacy to what
could have been a very standard rock sound.
I’ve stressed this many
times, Clutch is not your old fashion “Daddy Rock”. The band is in no way
mainstream material, but the musicianship, strong vocals and thought provoking lyrics
are undeniably worth listening too.
So what’s the latest
news from Clutch? The band is set to release a new album sometime this year
(2012). For now, they have been teasing the release by playing “Newt”, a
working titled song during the live shows.
